Welcome 2013/14 Students to a New School Year!
I am very excited about my new position as Title One Coordinator. I will be working together with Mr. Wright to help students in all grade levels review and improve their skills. We will be assisting students who need more intensive assistance in a smaller group within the classroom or may be pulling out students for more individualized help. Student will review reading/math from the previous year and work to improve in areas that need strengthening. I look forward to working alongside the classroom teachers and with families to move students to a higher level of success. Be sure to stop by and say hello on Meet the Teacher Night, July 29th, from 4-6 pm.

WATT Would You Do if the Grid Went Down Project
Our 4th and 6th grade classes have spend a great deal of time focusing on energy this year. We were awarded a fantastic grant which has allowed us to develop an energy STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) project which allows students do work with real world issues and understand the role electricity plays in our everyday life. If electrical power were to fail, what would we do? Our emergency rescue/survival station powered by solar panels and solar technology will provide needed energy resources to find needed materials using a GPS, power a communication station, purify water, and cook food for the camp's population. Skills to be gained are: learning how to use a GPS, emergency First Aid, Solar Cooking, what water is safe to drink, and using math to calculate the power we use in the daytime to make sure we can power our nighttime power requirements with our battery storage. Students will understand the difference between AC and DC power. Student will be in teams and be it solar flare blackout, forest fire disaster relief, or other emergency situation our response teams will save the day!

It is very important for your student to set high expectations for themselves. With the new more difficult expectations of Common Core in our future it is very important that you review the expectations with your child. Below is a link provided by the National PTA for parents. September News
We have completed the first few weeks of school, beginning of the year assessments, and review of third grade skills. Therefore, we are ready to move forward to the challenging work this year. It is very important to keep up with the homework and for parents to check their child's accountability sheet.
Reading logs are very important to your child's future success. Why??? Simple.... school and life require that students be fluent readers and have a large vocabulary. Parents please take all opportunities to expand your child's vocabulary in English and Spanish too. Have your child read the sentences they write telling about what they have just read. The skills needed to correctly write sentences, capitalizing proper nouns, using exact verbs, and reading comprehension are all being practiced.
School menus have been sent home along with some fundraising questionaires. If you have any suggestions or would like to volunteer at the school please contact the office.
A BIG THANK YOU!!!! to the parents who have sent in paper towels, wipes for cleaning desks, and tissues. We use them often and appreciate your help in having them available for the students to use.
